Michael gives a good algebraic proof of how the formula works out which shows why, for random numbers, the statement is not true.
 
For a concrete example lets just set A=3, B=4
 
√(A2+B2) = √(32+42) = √(9+16) = √25 = 5
 
A + B = 3 + 4 =7
