Can someone help me with this exponent problem please?

 If 4^x+2=32, then 2x=?

Maybe I misunderstood. Is it 4^x + 2 = 32, or is it 4^(x+2) = 32?

If it's the second one, then, since 4 = 2², we can rewrite this as:

(2²)^x+2 = 32, or    2^{2x +4} =  32    But 32 = 2⁵, so 2x + 4 = 5, so 2x =1

4^x+2 = 32

 

Now 4 = 2²; so

 

4^x+2 = (2²)^x+2 = 2^2x+4 = 2^2x*2⁴ = 16*2^2x

16*2^2x = 32

2^2x = 2¹

 

2x = 1
