In algebra, f(2) means "What's y if x is replaced by 2?"
(f +g)(x) means "add f(x) + g(x) together", so here that would give: 2x2 + 3x + (x - 2) = 2x2 + 4x - 2
So (f +g)(2) means "Now replace x by 2, and get the answer", so that's 2(2)2 + 4(2) - 2 = 14
Now you could have done f(2) + g(2) separately, which is: [2(2)2 + 3(2)] + [2 - 2] = 14 - 0 = 14
