two cars start at the same time from two cities 360 miles apart and travel toward each other one at 50 miles an hour and the other at 40 miles an hour, in how many hours will they meet?

time traveled for both cars = t

distance traveled by 50 mi/h car = x

distance traveled by 40 mi/h car will be = (360 - x)

 

50 mi/h = x/t   --> x = 50t

 

40 mi/h = (360-x)/t

 

40 =(360 - 50t)/t

40t = 360 - 50t

90t = 360

t = 4 hrs.
