A 13ft ladder is leaning against a building with a the base of the ladder leaning 2ft away from the building.

Gregg is exactly right except he forgot to replace the hypotenuse with 13 instead of 12 in which leg1 was going to equal  √165 after you finish subtracted from it. The exact answer is actually √165

True story:  In a difficult engineering course, the answer in the back of the book was wrong for one of the three homework problems.  A couple guys realized that they could change one formula in the middle of their solution and make the final answer match the book.  So they inserted their "adjustment."  When the homework was turned in, the prof mentioned the book error.
