Renting a car

Question

A rental car costs $25 for one day, plus an additional $1.00 per mile. Mike rents the car and then drives 50 miles.

 

Part A: Write and equation to represent the cost for renting the car, C, based on the number of miles M.

 

Part B: What is the cost of renting a car for one day and driving it 50 miles.

Part A)

 

C depends on the M.

 

M is the independent variable.

C is the dependent variable.

 

The rate is $1 per mile.  We can write this part as 1M, or just M.  Add this to $25.  The equation becomes

 

C = M + 25

 

 

Part B)

 

Use the answer from part A.

 

Plug in M = 50

They are charging you $25 for one day and $1 for every mile you drive.

PART A:

To obtain the cost, C, we can say that

C=25+M

where M is the number of miles you drove. 

PART B: 

The car was driven for 50 miles and we want to know the total cost of everything.

Luckily we have the equation

C=25+M

so we can just plug in 50 to our variable M.

C=25+M

C=25+50

C=75

So the total cost is $75.
