Cakes for sale

Question

Its the morning of a school carnival and 16 cakes are on the table so far. Cakes are being sold by the whole and by the slice. Families arrive and buy a total of 12 3/4 cakes by noon. 14 more cakes are dropped off for sale. Another 7 1/8 cakes are sold by the end of the day. How many cakes are left over?

Answer 1

Number of cakes =  16  - 12 3/4  + 14  - 7 1/8

                 N = 16 + 14 - 12 3/4 - 7 1/8      (rearrange whole numbers)

                 N =      30    - 12   - 7  - 3/4  - 1/8        (separate whole numbers and fractions)

                 N =               11          - 6/8  - 1/8        (calculate whole number; convert 3/4 to 6/8)

                 N =               11   -  7/8                 (total the fractions)

                 N = 10 1/8                (note:  11 is 10 8/8)
