We need to designate a variable for the number of student tickets and the number of nonstudent tickets sold;
Let S = #student tickets
Let N = #nonstudent tickets
We know that a total of 150 tickets were sold so:
S + N = 150
We also know that the total revenue was $930 so:
5S + 8N = 930 because each student ticket was $5 and each nonstudent ticket cost $8
Equation 1: S+N = 150
Equation 2: 5S + 8N = 930
We can solve for one variable in terms of the other in equation 1. Solving for S we have S=150-N
Replace S with 150-N in equation 2 and solve for N
5(150-N) + 8N = 930
750 - 5N + 8N = 930
750+3N = 930
3N = 930-750
3N = 180
N = 60
There wee 60 nonstudent tickets sold
S = 150-N = 150-60 = 90
There were 90 student tickets sold
