Again, I am not sure what system to use to solve these problems.

 

a) a²+1=50

 

b) (b+3)²+4=125

For these two problems, you will want to use the square root procedure, which involves getting anything that is squared on its own side, taking the square root (don't forget +/- ) and solving for your variable. So, for part (a), subtracting 1 from both sides yields

 a²=49. Taking the square root of both sides gives us  a= +/- 7.  So you have two possible answers: a=-7,7

 

I'll leave part (b) to you, using the same procedure.
