If the number of male participants is more than the female, the chance (1/2) of a runner up and champion being from the same gender (either female or male) cannot be the same for male and female.

The way I interpreted the question was that the chance of the winner and runner up being from the same same gender meant either both male or both female.  It's true that the probabilities are different for both male and both female, but when you add them together, you get 1/2.  That's how I calculated my answer.
