FOIL:

• Multiply the First terms (4a*3a)
• Multiply the Outer terms (4a*(-9))
• Multiply the Inner terms (9*3a)
• Multiply the Last terms (9*(-9))
• Then add them together

 

(4a + 9)(3a - 9)

 

    = 4a*3a + 4a*(-9) + 9*3a + 9*(-9)

 

    = 12a² - 36a + 27a - 81

 

Combine the two like terms in the middle:

 

    = 12a² - 9a - 81

=4a(3a-9)+9(3a-9)             Distribute the first bracket and multiply each element there by the second bracket content

=12a^2 -36a+27a-81          Multiply out

=12a^2 -9a -81                  simplify. 

 

Use this as a template for all similar questions. Mind your signs though. For example if the first bracket was 4a-9 then you would have two negatives (-9*-9) which will result in +81.
