For your thesis statement, first select one of the three purposes of the ancient epic.  For example, let's choose "to inspire."  Can you think of any contemporary stories that are inspiring?  (I'm sure you can, there are many.)  Now, it's a useful idea to restate the question in your thesis statement and to move from a general statement to a specific statement.  For example: The ancient epic has influenced contemporary literature in a variety of ways, but .... has had a special influence on...

 

Notice how that statement starts with "a variety of ways" them moves to "Special influence."  Now think of the types of stories we tell today that are inspiring/entertaining/ect.  Select a few and describe how they are similar to these ancient epics.
