Decide which ordered pair is a solution of the system

2x-3y=4
x+4y=-9
 
A) (1, -2) 
B) (-1,-2)
C) (-1, 2)
D) (1, 2)

Just a note about multiple choice questions and distractors (the four choices A,B,C,B).
 
If the question has just one correct answer, then you may be able to eliminate distractors then choose between what's left (even guessing if it comes to that).
 
But there is something really special about these distractors -- ALL the x values a 1 or -1 and all of the y values are either 2 or -2.  That tells me that the purpose of this question is probably to see whether you can get the signs of the answer correct.
 
You might even notice that in order to get 9 (in equation for second line) we must have y=-2 since 2x and x can only be 2,-1,-2, or 2  (in A,B,C,D).  So y=-2.
 
Using equation 2,       x+4(-2) = -9  gives x=-=1 quickly.
 
Sometimes thinking is much better than calculating.  However, thinking and calculating is the best of all (so don't stop thinking!).
