This problem sounds like it is meant to illustrate the fact that parentheses are useful either to clarify or to change the order of operations.  Expressions in parentheses are performed first (PLZ memorize Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally, it will be very useful); also, perform be operations inside internal nested parentheses first.
 
And, if you don't already have a chart for translating word problem to precise, concise math expressions, start with:
        the sum of a and b             a + b
        a subtracted from b            b - a
        the quantity d                     (d)
...
Add to this table every time you find a new phrase in a word problem.
 
Also, for try removing or changing the parentheses and see how it changes the value of the expression.  For example,
     4a + (b - x) + y
