volume of right rectangular prism

Question

a right rectangular prism has a 16 ft square base and a height of 3 feet.  What is the volume of the right rectangular prism?

A square base means that the base is in the shape of a square:

A_sqr = s²

16 = s²

s = √16

s = 4

In truth, we could have used the 16, but I wanted to break it up to let you see what's going on.

 

The volume is length * width * height.

We were given the height as 3 ft, and we solved the length and width to each be 4 ft so:

V = 3 ft * 4 ft * 4 ft

V = 3 ft * 16 ft²

V = 48 ft³
