A square base means that the base is in the shape of a square:
Asqr = s2
16 = s2
s = √16
s = 4
In truth, we could have used the 16, but I wanted to break it up to let you see what's going on.
The volume is length * width * height.
We were given the height as 3 ft, and we solved the length and width to each be 4 ft so:
V = 3 ft * 4 ft * 4 ft
V = 3 ft * 16 ft2
V = 48 ft3
