The word "squared" means to raise a number to the power of two - so 2 becomes the exponent.

 

In the case of writing "9 squared", that would look like 9².

 

As a side note, the word "cubed" means to raise a number to the power of three - so 3 becomes the exponent.  For any  exponents other than 2 or 3, the phrase "raised to the ___ power" or "raised to the power of ___" is normally used.
