There are a couple of ways to solve this. Here is a quick and dirty way:

165.84 ÷ 10 = 16.584

16.584 ÷ 2 = 8.292 (This constitutes 5% as 10 divided by 2 is 5)

165.84 ÷ 100 = 1.6584 (This constitutes 1%)

 

  8.292

+1.6584

----------

  9.9504

 

Sales tax comes to $9.95

 

If you have a calculator handy, you can also just multiply the amount by .06:

165.84 * .06 = 9.9504

And again, that rounds to $9.95
