Kyle gave 2/7 of his money to his wife, so he had 5/7 left.  He spent 3/5 of 5/7 so that leaves 3/7 (3/5 * 5/7 = 3/7).  So he has $300 left which is 3/7 of the money he had at first (x).  The equation would be 3/7x = 300.  So when you solve for x, the answer is that he had $700 at first.
