Let's let X = the number of 5kg parcels and Y = the number of 1kg parcels

 

From the question we have 2 equations:

 

X + Y = 45

 

5X + 1Y = 153

 

Put equation 1 in to Y form.

 

Y = 45 - X

 

Substitute 45 - X in to equation 2.

 

5X + (45 - X) = 153

 

Simplify

 

4X + 45 = 153

 

Subtract 45 from both sides

 

4X = 108

 

Divide both sides by 4

 

X = 27

 

Substitute 27 in to equation 1 to solve for Y

 

Y = 45 - 27 = 18

 

There are 27 5kg parcels and 18 1kg parcels.
