2n+3n+7=-41 what is n??

i was wondering what n was

combine 2n and 3n because they are similar factors to get 5n. 

5n+7=-41

then subtract 7 from the left side and move it to the right

5n=-41(-7)

5n=-48

then divide 5n by 5 to cancel out the number and divide -48 by 5

n=-48/5

and you will get n=-9.6

It is a bit unfortunate that n is used in this problem as n is normally used as an integer variable, yet the equation in this problem has no integer solutions. I would have used q because the solution is rational.

It's a shame that many school textbooks occasionally disobey common conventions for variables: k,m,n for integers, p,q,r, for rationals x,y,z for real numbers, z for complex numbers, i,j for indices (ai or aj).
