You can use the relationship for an exterior angle with one leg being tangent to a circle with the other leg being a secant to the circle:

(b + c)(b) = a²

So, in your case:

(16 + x)(x) = 6²

16x + x² = 36

x² + 16x - 36 = 0

(x + 18)(x - 2) = 0

x = -18 and x = 2

We can through out the negative answer because sement lengths are not negative so x = 2
