Read all you can get your hands on. Nothing better than reading, since it provides you with context, that means, what kind of subject, sentence, meaning, culture, surrounds that word. Doing word searches is fun, and it does help, but nothing will build vocabulary faster than reading good books, magazines, even good quality websites. When watching movies, do use captions, when acquiring vocabulary in a foreign language, because then you not only hear, see the context, connect the dots of when, where and how to use the word, how the word sounds, how people react to that word etc., but you also can learn the spelling of that word. That allows the student to learn very fast. Another good way to acquire vocabulary is through songs. I learned a lot of English through songs myself, and it's just amazing how much you can learn that way... Watching people, specialists or not, talk about different subjects also adds many words to our vocabulary.
