You balance chemical equations by making sure you have the same number of atoms of each element on BOTH sides of the equation. How do you do this? Well, that depends. Many times you simply do it by trial and error, by changing coefficients for the different reactants and products. Other times, for example in combustion reactions, you first balance C, then H and finally O.
