asked 10/14/24Structures and Intra/Inter-Molecular Hydrogen Bonds
I need help drawing the structures in particular how the conformation would make for good H-bond alignment. I am also unsure of how to properly indicate the intra and inter-molecular H-bonds.
1) Draw the structure of fumaric acid and maleic acid; indicate any intra-molecular hydrogen bonds that are likely to occur. (Hint: draw the structures in a conformation that makes for good H-bond alignment, remember that single bonds allow free rotation.)
2) Draw the structures of fumaric and maleic acid; indicate all inter-molecular hydrogen bonds that are likely to occur.

My drawings are a little sloppy but hopefully you'll get the idea. Also, on a couple of occasions I said formic acid, but meant fumaric acid. Fumaric acid is the trans isomer of butenoic acid and maleic acid is the cis isomer. No intramolecular H-bonding in fumaric acid, but maleic acid does have intramolecular H-bonding. Both acid do show intermolecular H-bonding.
