NOTE: As of the summer of 2024, the LSAT has dropped the Logic Games. The below answer will, therefore, not treat them as a relevant factor in your decision making.
This question assumes that your target schools are actually considering both tests, which may not be the case. Be sure to check and make sure that the law schools you are considering actually take the GRE in lieu of the LSAT.
If even some of them don’t, your choice is made for you: go with the LSAT. No credible law school refuses the LSAT. Some still refuse the GRE.
If, on the other hand, your target schools are ALL open to both, then you have a unique opportunity to choose the test that fits your unique strength/weakness profile like a glove. While you should probably still schedule a consultation with an expert who teaches both tests to make the final decision, the below script will probably help you make your decision if you need to make it yourself.
First, try a practice LSAT or two UNTIMED, just so you can get a feel for the content. Ask yourself:
1. Am I more comfortable with the Reading Comprehension section or the Logical Reasoning sections?
a. If it’s Logical Reasoning, take the LSAT. There are 2 Logical Reasoning sections & 1 Reading Comp section on the current version of the LSAT, which means it will really favor your strength and minimize your weakness (though you will obviously still need to be strong in Reading Comp to do well).
b. If it’s Reading Comprehension, ask yourself the next question.
2. Was I objectively great at Math in High School? (i.e. got a high Math score on my SAT or ACT, took one of the the highest Math course my high school offered, etc).
a. If Yes, strongly consider the GRE. Showing strong Quant skills can help distinguish you from the mostly Humanities-centered applicant pool.
b. If No, it’s a no-brainer – take the LSAT, hands-down.
