Think of it this way:
CRIMES are CRIMINAL offenses against a person...things like rape, assault, robbery, murder, etc...things you can be arrested and go to jail or prison for.
TORTS are CIVIL offenses against a person...things like negligence, wrongful death, wrongful imprisonment, defamation, libel, infliction of emotional distress...
Some things can be both a CIVIL and CRIMINAL offense, such as battery, assault, wrongful death, etc.
