Cl in Cl2 has oxidation number = 0
Cl in NaCl has oxidation number = -1
Cl has been reduced
Na in Na has oxidation number of 0
Na in NaCl has oxidation number = +1
Na has been oxidized
Oxidation half reaction:
Na ==> Na+ + e- .. balanced oxidation half reaction
Reduction half reaction:
Cl2 + 2e- ==> 2Cl- .. balanced reduction half reaction
To finish balancing the oxidation reaction, you must multiply by 2 to equalize the electrons being transferred.
2Na ==> 2Na+ + 2e-
