Complementary means that the two angles will add to 90^o . SO we can set up an equation with both -->

<1 + <2 =90

Next replace with the values of each

72 +2x =90. Next. Isolate the x term by subtracting 72 from each side.

-72. -72

This will give you. 2x = 18. Next divide both sides by 2 to isolate just X.

2x/2. = 18/2 ---> x=9

You can double check your work and make sure that the totals work out to 90^o by plugging in 9 into the equation. 72+ 2(9) =90? 72+18=90. 90=90.....Therefore x=9 is the correct answer because 90=90 is a true math sentence.
