Breakthrough for Dyslexia and Reading Disorders!

People with dyslexia are actually very smart.

They see the whole picture, but the pathways throughout get confused. Research shows that many students with dyslexia struggle with phonological dyslexia, where difficulty lies in identifying and manipulating sounds in words. This often stems in auditory processing. But dyslexia can also be tied to visual processing, as seen in surface dyslexia and other variations.

Here's the encouraging part: dyslexic students can learn to read and spell. Neuroscience confirms that the brain can be rewired through structured, intentional practice.

The most effective interventions use research-backed methods that include:

1. Explicit phonemic awareness instruction
2. Systematic phoneme instruction
3. Fluency development strategies
4. Vocabulary enrichment
5. Reading comprehnesion skills
6. Brain-based activities such as "brain gymnastics." (These involve body-mind coordinated motor skills to enhance processing speed and cognition)

With over 35 years of experience not only in dyslexia, but also reading, spelling, core learning skills,ADD, and more, my goal is to recreate a comfortable, independent learner.

Yes! Teaching reading and writing is my passion; working with struggling readers is my specialty. BLS, the dyslexia program used, incorporates both reading and writing, including handwriting. I also create games and activities according to the concept being studied to reinforce learning. . . and for fun!! Games are one of the best ways to get concepts to "stick"!

I have also been the resident dysgraphia expert on my campus for the past 5 years. Dysgraphia is considered "a unicorn"---comprised of difficulty in spelling, handwriting and written composition. However, the weaknesses in each of the aforementioned areas vary according to the student. I find it fascinating!!! I have studied dysgraphia on my own, read books, purchased many different "tools" and have recently completed a training entitled, "All about Dysgraphia"---I knew more about the subject than the instructor!!!
