Hi Selene L, I think the question here is actually asking you to look up the relationships of the sides to the angles in a right triangle also called the Trigonometric Ratios. I think it is just asking whether you are familiar with the ratios and are able to recognize them regardless of the labels given. That said, you can look up the Trigonometric Ratios in your text or online. Metin E gave a great description below covering both angles x and y.

q is the length of the hypotenuse.


There are 2 possible answers.


Looking at it from the perspective of angle x:

  1. r is the length of the side adjacent to it
  2. p is the length of the side opposite to it

So the cosine of the angle x is given by:

cos(x) = r / q


Looking at it from the perspective of angle y:

  1. p is the length of the side adjacent to it
  2. r is the length of the side opposite to it

So the sine of the angle y is given by:

sin(y) = r / q
