Adult men have an average height of 69.0 inches with a standard deviation of 2.8 inches. Find the height of a man with a z-score of 3.39. Round your answer to one decimal place

Hi Morgan,
This question uses the classic equation in elementary statistics: z= (x-mu)/sigma. Here, you are given z, mu, and sigma. X is the height you are looking for. Breaking this down:
z= 3.39
x= x, desired height
mu = mean = 69.0
sigma = standard deviation = 2.8
Now, substitute into:
z=(x-mu)/sigma
3.39 = (x-69.0)/2.8
Multiply both sides by 2.8:
9.492 = x - 69.0
Add 69 on both sides:
x = 78.492
Round to one decimal
x=78.5
I hope this helps.

Hi Morgan, if you don’t want to solve the algebraic equation, you may use the inverse formula: x=mu+z*sigma=69.0+3.39*2.8 =78.492 or round to 78.5 in. I hope this helps. Lily Q02/23/24
