How do we know when do draw a coordinate bond? Like in (ON)- there is a coordinate bond formed after removing an e- from N

Not exactly sure what ON^- or NO^- is, but if you were to draw the Lewis dot structure it might look something like this:

Where there is a dative (coordinate) bond between the N and the O but it appears to be from the lone pair of electrons donated by the O and not by the N. Since ON^- is foreign to me, maybe someone else can shed more light on this topic.
