We start with the line segment TV. We are told that U is the midpoint of TV. So, put a point in the middle of segment TV and label it U. TV is now divided into 2 equal parts: TU and UV.
It is given that the entire segment TV = 11x + 3
AND that one part (half) of TV, which is segment TU is equal to 7x.
So, by definition of a midpoint, TU and UV are equal lengths and when adding them together they equal the length of TV.
TU = 7x , therefore UV = 7x
So, 7x + 7x = 11x + 3
14x = 11x + 3
-11x. -11x
3x = 3
x = 1
TV = 11x + 3
= 11(1) + 3
= 11 + 3 = 14
