Two search teams spot a stranded climber between them on a mountain. The first team is 0.7 miles from the second team, and both teams are at an altitude of 0.3 miles. The angle of elevation from the first team to the stranded climber is 14 o . The angle of elevation from the second team to the climber is 20 o . What is the altitude of the climber? Round to the nearest hundredth of a mile.
1 Expert Answer
The remaining angle in the triangle at the stranded climber is:
180° - (14° + 20°) = 146°
Let a = the side opposite the 14° angle
Using the law of sines
Let h be equal to the additional elevation of the climber (above the teams elevation).
Total elevation = 0.30 + 0.10 - 0.40 miles
