Math and Statistics need not be scary
It is hard to understand exactly what you are talking about but in general if you have multiple data sets which you are comparing, those which show the greatest spread in occurrence of values will have the greatest variance / standard deviation. For example, if the below graphic reflects the histogram or vertical display of values from two data sets with the same means, the left one will have more variance. In truth, the best way to chack is to just enter the data into a file and use R or other software calculate the variance.
