Help with the answer

a string of magnesium, some copper turnings, and zinc granules. You would like to create a reactivity series that will list these metals in order of their chemical reactivity.

Describe how you will carry out an investigation to create a reactivity series of these elements. Include the following in your answer:

  1. What reagents will you need?
  2. What equipment will be used?
  3. How will you carry out the procedure?
  4. Any safety requirements for this activity?
  5. What will be your expected results?

This is actually an interesting question, since you have wide latitude in the types of reactions you might use to rank reactivity of the metals. Some possibilities: reactions with water, hot water, mild acids, mild bases; reaction with a haloalkane to make a Grignard reagent, with subsequent use in a synthesis reaction (only magnesium will perform there); then a galvanic cell to distinguish the copper from zinc by generated potential. You may have to argue minutae of Cu(+1) vs. Cu(+2) as products, but you will definitely learn a lot of chemistry in the process plus give your instructor an interesting read. Or you could just set up galvanic cells for all 3 metals, after pressing the given materials into solid electrodes, and argue from E(0) relative values.
