MgBr₂ + Cl₂ ==> MgCl₂ + Br₂

In introductory chemistry, this is taught as a SINGLE REPLACEMENT reaction. It is also a redox reaction.

Although one might conceive of this as a substitution of sorts, it's better thought of as a redox reaction. The bromines are oxidized from (-1) to (0) formal charge, and the chlorines are reduced from (0) to (-1). The magnesium is just along for the ride, so to speak.

If I'm not mistaken, this is how traditionally Br2 is obtained from bromide-containing brines, by reacting them with Cl2. I think one can even wring a little Br2 from seawater, similarly. Which would probably carry along some I2 with it. Iodine is fabulously expensive these days, surprising that no entrepreneurs on the ocean are drying seaweed and chlorinating it, to extract I2.
