Math, microeconomics or criminal justice
for the 31st year (some say "just" 5 years) Labs are the Number One most popular dog breed.
Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers #1, Golden Retrievers also in the top 10
During the Pandemic many people in lockdowns adopted dogs. Now with lockdowns easing, many are giving up their pet dogs, dropping them off at overworked rescue and humane society centers, so there may be a surplus of dogs waiting to be adopted.
This might be the time to adopt a Lab (not to be confused with laboratory). But you never know. Timing is more to do with when you're ready, with the time, responsibility & cost. Dogs require licenses, shots, vet visits,
medical care, food, housebreaking, training, it's more when you're up to it all. Also microchip the dog, so if it ever gets lost people who find the dog can contact you.
"Happiness is a warm puppy" as the Peanuts cartoon strip once said, about Snoopy, a beagle. Puppies do get the major attention. But older dogs have been housebroken and trained. But they don't live as long, heart breaking when they leave us.
It's really cost benefit analysis. Some positives, some negatives. When the +++ outweigh the ----- negatives, it may be time. No time deadline. Also, there are alternative pets: other breeds, cats, parakeets, parrots, hamsters, gerbles, fish, rabbits, ponies, horses. (avoid reptile or rodent pets)
Or sometimes the dog finds you, follows you home. Like in the classic movie/play "Annie" with Sandy, or 2019 movie "A Dog's Way Home," with Bella. Or the story/movie about a real Japanese dog "Hachi" follows its owner anywhere/everywhere, forever. Not labs though. Hachi was an Akito breed. Most loyal dog ever. Sandy was a mutt, mixed breed, Bella a pit bull (not recommended) but if trained it's ok. Still, labs are top of the heap, 1/3 of a century favorite so far.
Most every US president has had a pet dog or cat or both, so you're in good company.
Your question said "we" as if they're several of you contemplating getting a dog. All the above applies to all of you. Go with a consenus, hopefully a unanimous vote. Odds are the day and time w.ill be one of your birthdays or Christmas, Hanukkah if you're Jewish, or another memorable date if None of the Above. Or any date the dog chooses, if s/he follows one of you home and you just can't reject him/her.
America is the Land of Dog Lovers. A lawyer/economist, son of a president's head of economic advisors, Herb Stein, his son Benjamin Stein, once wrote an opinon column titled 'Dogs: God's gift to humanity" Good article Then there's the movie Stripes starring Bill Murray where he does a monologue on how Americans are mutts, mixed breeds, while the other "superior" countries were pure breeds. It was a famous argument that compares Americans to dogs, in a very positive way. This year, the Georgia Bulldogs may be national college football champions, Bulldogs ok, but labs definitely better.
Dogs are often heros. They sometimes save people, alert sleeping people to a fire, good security as they wake up the owners to burglars trying to break in. Police use them in drug raids, or even to detect bombs. Some say they can detect cancer. Their sense of smell is off the charts. Their loyalty helpfulness off the charts. They sense your mood, spread joy, happiness, whimper when they thiink you're sad.
there're police dogs, military dogs, service dogs helping the blind or disabled, greyhound racing dogs. amazing dogs in every way
