Question

A sample of gas in a balloon has an initial temperature of 1.0 ∘C and a volume of 1.04×10³ L . If the temperature changes to 68 ∘C , and there is no change of pressure or amount of gas, what is the new volume, V2, of the gas?

I am spinning my wheels, what am I doing wrong to solve this? Please show the steps you took.

With no change in pressure or amount of gas, we are dealing with Charles Law, and remember when dealing with gases, we should always use Kelvin scale for temperature.

Charles Law:

V1/T1 = V2/T2

V1 = initial volume = 1.04x10³ L

T1 = initial temperature in Kelvin = 1ºC + 273 = 274K

V2 = final volume = ?

T2 = final temperature in Kelvin = 68ºC + 273 = 341K

Solve for V2:

V2 = V1T2 / T1

V2 = (1.04x10³)(341) / 274

V2 = 1294 liters

Does this answer make sense? As you increase the temperature, in order for the pressure to remain the same, the volume MUST increase. And it did. It went from 1040 liters to 1294 liters.

V2 = V1/T1 X T2 = 1.04 X 10-3 L/1C X 68C = .07L

V2/68 = V1/1 = V1 = 1.04 x 10^3

V2 = 68(1.04 x 10^3) = 70.72 x 10^3

1294.2 Liters is one online solution or 1.2942 x 10^3 Liters. one mistake is using the wrong units

another method is the volume increases by 1/273 for ever 1 degree increase in temperature. 273 is related to the Kelvin temperature scale. try to work a problem in different ways. If you come up with the same answer, you may be right.

WAG is 7 is very likely in the answer, prominently, somewhere. (a Big Clue, like the "W" in the movie "The Russians are Coming" as they discover the treasure between palm trees in the shape of W (not George W. Bush though)) That WAG stands for an educated Guess, or half educated, half another thing too.
