Casper prompt and questions

Many groundbreaking scientific and medical advances were due to animal testing. For example, we owe our understanding of the nervous system to experiments with squids; and treatments for cancer, diabetes, smallpox, and polio were all tested in animals before deemed safe for humans. Generally, our perception of an animal’s intelligence decides if they are part of our moral circle, and thus if we can use them in the lab, or even eat them. However, there is a growing body of evidence that suggests animals think, perceive, and feel in ways we did not understand before. 1. What are your views on animal testing? 2. Recently, compelling data came out that shows pigs are as cognitively complex as dogs and chimpanzees —yet society treats them quite differently. If you were a political leader, would you act on this knowledge? If so, how? 3. Throughout history, cultural shifts have drastically affected our perceptions of morality and our behavior as human beings. What is the most significant cultural shift of the last century in your opinion?
