Why are “vertical angles” called “vertical angles” instead of something that makes sense?

I always think they should have named vertical angles opposite angles because that’s what they really look like. They can be horizontal or vertical or just diagonal. What’s the deal with vertical?

While we might think of the vertical and horizontal axes of the coordinate plane when we learn about vertical angles, their name actually refers to their shared vertex, at the point where the lines intersect.
