The lengths of a professor's classes has a continuous uniform distribution between 50.0 min and 52.0 min. If one such class is randomly selected, find the probability that the class length is more than 50.5 min.
Approach:
Draw a rectangular box on a XY plane. Lower left corner of the box be 50 and upper left corner of the box be 52. Let horizontal length of the box be 0.5. The total probability: (52-50) * 0.5 = 1. So, it fits into the scheme of probability framework.
Now to get the desired probability, we have to find the area of the part box between 50.5 and 52.
Probability = (52 - 50.5) * 0.5 = 1.5 * 0.5 = 0.75
Hence the answer is: There is 75% probability (0.75) that the class will last longer than 50.5 minutes.
