Photoshop - Selected area control question

Photoshop - How do I make an area I selected lighter or darker in just that area without affecting the rest of the image? I'm working with Triptychs and just want to lighten the images and not the grey (chosen) background.

Yes, I tried this but no matter what selection tool I tried the adjustment was greyed out so there was nothing to click on. That does work on a separate single image but on my triptych where I have 4 layers (3 images and a background) it's grey out out when I select one of the images.

Without seeing this firsthand, I would guess that you have the wrong layer chosen in the Layers Panel. Check to see which layer is chosen.
