The area of a rectangle is found by multiplying the length by the width. Conveniently, it doesn't matter which side you choose to be length or width.
Lets let our length, L, be the 4cm side and our width, W, be the 8cm side.
A = L · W
A = 4cm · 8cm
A = 32 cm2
Notice the units: because we multiplied centimeters by centimeters, we get a factor of centimeters squared. This is super important!
