Why can I no longer select and resize the object on my Illustrator layer with the sizing handles?

The only thing I see when I select what is on the layer are "anchor points" in the corners. And I am not using the direct selection tool.

The most likely possibility is that you have turned the View>Show Bounding Box off by mistake.
