The number of girls in Sphens class exceeded the number of boys by 8. If there were 36 pupils in the class, how many were girls and how many were boys? Put your answer in the form G,B.

Answer 1

G = no girls; B = no. boys

G = B + 8 (given)

G + B = 36 so, by substuting, (B + 8) + B = 36

2B = 28 so B = 14

G = B + 8 = 14 + 8 = 22

Check: G + B = 22 + 14 = 36 and girls exceed boys by 8.

G= B+8

G+B = 36

B +8 + B = 36

2B = 36-8= 28

B = 28/2 = 14 Boys
