C+5 = 5(J+5) = 5J +25

in 5 years Cruz will be 5 times as old as Jimmy

C = 5J +20

set the two expressions for C equal:

5J+20 = 28 +J

5J-J = 28-20

4J = 8

divide by 4

J = 8/4 = 2 years old for Jimmy which is a little young for a student, no matter how bright

C =28+J = 28+2 = 30 years old for Mr. Cruz

there may be a mistake in the problem, as usually they are a little more realistic. Jimmy looks a little too young. but the math says he's 2 and Mr. Cruz 30.
