Would you expect distribution of the data to be symmetric, skewed to the right, or skewed to the left?

  1. During a recent semester at a school, students having accounts on a main frame computer had hard drive use (in kilobytes) described by the five-number summary, minimum = 4, Q1 = 256, median = 530, Q3 = 1,105, and maximum = 330,000.
  2. Would you expect distribution of the data to be symmetric, skewed to the right, or skewed to the left? Explain.
  3. Construct a box-and-whisker plot to describe the distribution. (Hint: Given that the second largest drive use is 2,000 kilobytes.)
