A boat heads directly north across a river 68 m wide at a rate of 3 m/s. The current is flowing downstream (due west) at 1.9 m/s.
A) What is the resultant velocity of the boat? What is the resultant direction of the boat?
B) How long does it take the boat to cross the river? (Hint: How long does it take to cover the vertical distance of 68 m across the river? Does a horizontal current affect vertical travel?)
C) How far downstream is the boat when it reaches the other side of the river? (What is the horizontal displacement, or distance, when the boat successfully travels the 68 m vertically to cross the river?)
