Actually, there is no perfect answer to this question. It is highly personalized.
American Dietary Guidelines recommend 2-3 servings of dairy per day for most adults. However, some countries such as Canada have gone away with having dairy as part of the recommended diet.
One serving could be:
1) 8 fluid ounces of milk (could be low-fat milk)
2) 1 ounce of cheese
3) 1 fluids ounce of half and half
4) 8 ounces of yogurt
If a person chooses to pursue a dairy-free/vegetarian diet, one can meet daily calcium needs by choosing other high calcium foods such as soybeans, legumes, and sesame seeds.
